As OTA goes deeper into debt, Oklahoma drivers will likely pay more at the toll booth

Two major initiatives aimed at preventing crashes along Oklahoma toll roads are wrapping up with the completion of adding cable barriers and the last turnpike conversion to cashless tolling later this month. 

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, however, is being hit with a 60% increase in construction costs as work is starting on several toll road projects funded through the $5 billion, 15-year ACCESS Oklahoma program. 

That in turn is expected to result in fare increases in the near future, warned Joe Echelle, executive director of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. The turnpike authority also is looking at going deeper into debt to complete ACCESS Oklahoma.
