Rodgers and Hammerstein only briefly mentioned wildflowers in 'Oklahoma!' but what we're experiencing now, with waving seas of brilliant color on the roadside, is in part thanks to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. ODOT gets a lot of recognition for its beautification program. Its "TRASH-OFF" campaign sees hundreds of volunteers every spring pitch in to clean up large swaths of highway roadsides. There's a trash poster contest to get kids involved early, and from that, around 30,000 calendars are produced and distributed to people across the state to remind everyone about the importance of keeping Oklahoma clean.
Lesser known, though, is ODOT's wildflower program.
