The Biden administration has made transitioning our nation’s transportation system from petroleum to electric a priority. While we can debate the advantages and disadvantages of the White House efforts to electrify everything ad nauseum, it’s clear that state and local governments must take action now to ensure the funding mechanisms that ensure the roads and bridges we use daily remain viable in the decades to come. Oklahoma has already taken steps to do so. On Thursday, House Bill 2234 – also known as the DRIVE Act – was approved on the House floor and now heads to the Senate for consideration. The bill by state Rep. Kyle Hilbert provides much-needed parity in the way transportation infrastructure is funded in Oklahoma. Just as drivers of internal combustion engine vehicles pay a tax at the gas pump, now electric vehicle drivers will pay a tax at public charging stations. These taxes will be used to maintain and improve infrastructure across the state.
