Work to widen Joplin’s 20th Street on the west side of the city will begin early next year and it will be the first project to implement the city’s Complete Streets design policy, according to Joplin’s public works director.
The Joplin City Council has authorized a contract for the construction work with Emery Sapp and Sons Inc. The city will pay the contractor $9,878,241.50 for the project, which involves widening 20th Street from Schifferdecker Avenue to Central City Road.
Dan Johnson, the city’s public works director, told the council that a version of the project that was to be done in two parts, first for the acquisition of right of way and second for the construction, was listed in the three-eighths-cent capital improvements sales tax that voters approved in 2014.
Later, city officials had an opportunity to work with the Jasper County Commission to make it a larger project using city and county funds from the American Rescue Plan Act plus assistance provided by the Joplin Special Road District. That allowed the project to be extended to Central City Road and to include the two roundabouts.
