EDITORIAL: Gas tax replacement study raises more questions | TAKE THE POLL

As hybrid and electric vehicles become more popular, the state of Oklahoma is looking for ways to tax such vehicles that use the state’s highways but don’t pay gasoline tax.

For years, the state tax on gasoline and diesel fuel has provided substantial funding for road and bridge building and maintenance. Oklahoma’s 20 cents-per-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel is among the lowest in the nation, but it still provides a significant amount of money, funds that are earmarked for highways.

With the introduction of more fuel-efficient vehicles and the addition of hybrid and electric cars, less gasoline is being sold. Thus, the state is getting less gas tax income, yet all vehicles share somewhat equally in wear and tear on Oklahoma roads, bridges and highways.
