U.S. Highway 69’s history as the Jefferson Highway will soon be the focus of many in the upcoming months.
In 1915, the Jefferson Highway was founded by the Jefferson Highway Association, a non-profit organization that aims to preserve, promote, and enhance the historic Jefferson Highway auto trail, connecting Winnipeg, Canada, to New Orleans, Louisiana, known as “The Pines to the Palms Highway.”
According to the Jefferson Highway Association, the highway followed a path originally worn by herds of bison. The native tribes who followed these herds established camps, villages, and mounds. What then became known as “Osage Trace” went on to form a line of forts and trading posts, and eventually towns.
