OKLAHOMA CITY — A hole in a bridge along one of Oklahoma City’s busiest highways backed up traffic for hours on Friday, and though lanes have been reopened, it raises questions on where the Sooner State ranks on bridges.
The bridge along Interstate 35 and Northeast 63rd Street underwent emergency repair on Friday after crews discovered a large hole. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said the bridge is set to be replaced next year, but data shows more than 1,000 bridges need fixing.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, Oklahoma is in desperate need of bridge repairs, with data from 2023 showing the state has the fifth most structurally deficient bridges in the nation.
