OKC City Council adopts Vision Zero Action Plan to improve roadway safety

City of Oklahoma City Post Date: 02/26/2025

The Oklahoma City Council adopted OKC’s Vision Zero Action Plan yesterday; the plan is designed to reduce fatal crashes, improve roadway safety and create a safer transportation system throughout Oklahoma City.

“We are excited about the City Council’s approval of the Vision Zero plan,” Transportation Program Planner Justin Henry said. “City staff from Planning, Public Works and Police will immediately start to dive into implementing this plan by reviewing our internal policies, revising our city standards, and proposing infrastructure safety improvements for some of our streets. I am grateful to the Council, staff, and most importantly, our residents for engaging with us on this important topic and providing us with vital feedback for making our streets safer.”

In the last five years, traffic deaths in Oklahoma City have increased 34%, with 99 lives lost in 2021 alone—many on high-speed, poorly lit roads. In addition to traffic and accident data, feedback from the community influenced the final plan. Vision Zero received nearly 2,000 comments from residents, both in person and online, with suggestions for the plan.

The Vision Zero Action Plan takes a holistic approach to address critical safety challenges, prioritizing solutions that protect lives and create safer streets for all road users.

It also provides policy recommendations to help the city reach its Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The plan contains sections dedicated to its analysis process, solution design, study corridors, and recommendations for plan implementation.

Due to this plan’s approval, the City can apply for implementation funds under the United States Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program as they become available.
