OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — Oklahoma City's Public Works Department tested a brine and beet solution on Sunday, with the goal of de-icing roads more efficiently than salt.
The beet solution is used in many northern cities including Calgary, Washington DC, and Cincinnati. Experts say it can work in colder temperatures than salt and is more cost-effective.
Sunday morning Oklahoma City treated 11 bridges and overpasses with a brine beet solution to see how well the potion performs.
"Most of the mixture is a beet juice product and it's all organic, it's all very eco-friendly," said Oklahoma City Public Works Emergency Manager, Mike Love Jr. "It's supposed to give us a colder working temperature, sometimes in the negatives, it just depends on the percentage of mixture."
