(KTEN) — The Willis Bridge has carried US 377 traffic across Lake Texoma since 1960. In February, a modern new, wider span opened to link Texas and Oklahoma.
But work to demolish the original mile-long bridge remains unfinished.
"There was a mitigation plan adopted to minimize the impacts and enhance the recreational use as well as the habitat around that area," said Jake Ellison, the lake manager for the US Army Corps of Engineers. "This is still very much a construction area — both in the water as well as along the roadway. "
Planning for the replacement bridge began in 2017, and now that removal of the original span is nearing completion, people are eager to see the final results.
