Roughly eight years ago, Oklahoma Department of Transportation began considering how to protect State Highway 10 from erosion by the Illinois River in the Hanging Rock area.
The final plan calls for a 10-foot retaining wall, approximately 850 feet long. The wall will follow the bank and the natural course of the river.
ODOT Division Engineer Chris Wallace said construction is projected to take about a year to complete, but water levels may push that timeframe back.
Wallace said the structure is designed to protect the road from further erosion. Between the retaining wall and the bank, rocks will be added to keep rising water from pressing the structure out into the river, Wallace said.
