The old Interstate 40 Crosstown Expressway was torn down a decade ago but the bridge beams that once supported thousands of vehicles daily are now helping rebuild county crossings across the state. Originally built in 1966, the original three-lane highway was a 2-mile-long bridge designed to carry up to 76,000 vehicles daily. To move the highway, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation embarked on one of its largest projects since the interstate system was completed in the 1970s. The replacement $680 million I-40 Crosstown is designed to carry about 173,000 vehicles daily on five lanes in each direction and includes a boulevard that connects into the heart of downtown Oklahoma City.
