One of Oklahoma City’s busiest intersections is about to get a “Texas turnaround” to relieve congestion by letting drivers avoid traffic lights going from one Kilpatrick Turnpike frontage road to the other. The joint project between the City of Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation will be one of a series of expansions that have taken place in recent years at the intersection of the turnpike, Pennsylvania Avenue and eastbound and westbound Memorial Road. The turnarounds, named after where they were first created, are dedicated lanes used on or below highway bridges to give drivers the option to bypass traffic signals at frontage road intersections. Texas turnarounds, also known as protected turnarounds, can be found along Interstate 240 in south Oklahoma City and Broadway Extension.
