On this day in 2007, transportation officials set the widening of Interstate 44 in Tulsa project.
The roughly $330 million improvement between Yale Avenue and Riverside Drive redesigned Oklahoma's oldest section of interstate highway, said Gary Ridley, Oklahoma Department of Transportation director.
ODOT Commissioner Guy Berry, who represents the Tulsa area, said the widening project will be an economic boon and change the city's image.
"We think it's one of the most dangerous sections of interstate highway in the United States, but it's certainly the most dangerous section in Oklahoma," Berry said.
Widening at Interstate 44 and 193rd East Avenue finished in December 2010. The final phase of the project is ongoing.
