Turnpike authority accused of breaking state law requiring city sign-off on new toll roads

Opponents of plans to build a new toll road in Norman say the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority violated state laws requiring it to partner with cities and towns before building new highways.

That cooperation, detailed in the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority Enabling Act, was recently rejected by the Norman City Council when they refused to pass a resolution requested by turnpike officials that detailed how the two would work together.

At issue is the 28-mile “east-west connector,” designed to connect Newcastle, Blanchard and Tuttle at State Highway 37 and NW 32 and cross the South Canadian River east to Interstate 35. The toll road will then continue east and northeast to Interstate 40 to connect with the Kickapoo Turnpike.
